How We Inspect Precision Stamped Parts for Reliable Mass Production

Created on 09.01
In precision metal stamping, producing a component is only one part of the manufacturing process. For automotive, new energy, electronics, medical, and industrial applications, customers also need confidence that parts remain consistent from the first production batch to long-term mass production.
Small dimensional changes, surface defects, burrs, deformation, or other inconsistencies can affect assembly, product performance, and downstream production efficiency. This is why inspection is an important part of precision stamping manufacturing.
At Dalian Hongyi Precision Parts Manufacturing Co., Ltd., quality control is integrated into the production process through a combination of automated visual inspection, dimensional measurement, process inspection, and final verification.
Our goal is simple: to support stable production and provide customers with consistent precision metal components.

Why Inspection Matters in Precision Metal Stamping

Metal stamping is a highly efficient manufacturing process, especially for medium- and high-volume production. Once the tooling and production parameters are properly established, large quantities of parts can be produced with high repeatability.
However, many factors can influence the final result.
These may include:
  • Material variation
  • Tool wear
  • Press settings
  • Feeding accuracy
  • Forming conditions
  • Burr formation
  • Surface contamination
  • Handling during production
  • Part deformation
For simple components, some variations may have little influence on function. For precision automotive, battery, electronic, or mechanical components, even a small deviation can create problems during assembly.
For example, an incorrect hole position may prevent proper installation. Excessive burrs may interfere with assembly or create safety concerns. Surface defects may affect appearance or subsequent processes. Dimensional variation may influence the fit between multiple components.
Inspection helps identify these risks before parts move further through the customer's production process.

Automated CCD Inspection for Consistent Quality

One of the inspection methods used in our factory is automated CCD visual inspection.
Hongyi currently operates 8 CCD inspection machines to support the quality control of suitable precision components.
CCD inspection systems use cameras and image-processing technology to evaluate specific visual characteristics of a component. Depending on the product and inspection requirements, the system can help identify differences in shape, position, appearance, or other visible features.
Compared with relying only on manual visual inspection, automated inspection provides several advantages for high-volume production.
First, it improves inspection consistency. Human inspectors can experience fatigue during repetitive work, especially when inspecting large quantities of small components. Automated systems follow predefined inspection criteria repeatedly.
Second, CCD inspection is suitable for continuous production environments. When parts are produced in high volumes, automated inspection can help maintain inspection efficiency without significantly slowing the production flow.
Third, image-based inspection can provide a more standardized approach for identifying specific visible defects.
The exact inspection method depends on the component itself. Different products have different critical characteristics, so the inspection program must be matched to the customer's drawing, specifications, and quality requirements.
We do not treat CCD inspection as a replacement for every other quality-control method. Instead, it works together with dimensional measurement and process inspection.

Dimensional Inspection

For precision stamped and deep-drawn components, dimensional accuracy is often one of the most important quality requirements.
Critical dimensions may include:
  • Outside diameter
  • Inside diameter
  • Height
  • Thickness
  • Hole diameter
  • Hole position
  • Flatness
  • Forming depth
  • Distance between features
  • Assembly-related dimensions
These dimensions can directly influence how a component fits with other parts.
During production, dimensional inspection is used to confirm that components remain within the required specification.
The exact measuring method depends on the geometry and tolerance requirements of each product. Different measuring instruments are selected according to the inspection requirement.
This is especially important during initial production setup. Before stable mass production begins, production conditions must be verified carefully to ensure the tooling, material, machine, and process parameters are working together correctly.
Dimensional checks also continue during production to help identify changes before they develop into larger quality problems.

In-Process Quality Control

Quality inspection should not begin only after thousands of parts have already been produced.
For this reason, process inspection is an important part of mass production.
During stamping production, operators and quality personnel monitor the manufacturing process according to the requirements of the specific product.
If a dimensional trend, surface issue, tooling condition, or abnormal production condition is identified, it can be investigated before production continues on a larger scale.
This approach is particularly important for long-term automotive and industrial projects.
A stamping die may produce millions of strokes during its service life. Tool wear must therefore be monitored and maintenance must be performed when necessary.
Hongyi has in-house tooling capabilities covering die design, assembly, commissioning, and maintenance. This allows tooling-related issues to be addressed more efficiently during production.
Inspection data and production feedback can also help determine when tooling adjustment or maintenance is required.

Inspection After Cleaning

Inspection and cleaning are closely connected.
In our previous article, we introduced how precision metal components can be cleaned using automated cleaning systems before further inspection, assembly, or shipment.
Removing oil, particles, and processing residue can make it easier to evaluate the actual surface condition of a component.
For products requiring visual inspection, a clean surface is especially important. Oil or contamination can hide small surface features and may also influence subsequent assembly or packaging.
This creates a connected manufacturing process:
Stamping → Cleaning → Inspection → Packaging → Delivery
Each stage supports the next.
The objective is not simply to produce a component quickly. The objective is to maintain stable quality throughout mass production.

Quality Control for Automotive and New Energy Components

Automotive and new energy projects often require particularly stable manufacturing processes because parts are produced repeatedly over long project cycles.
Customers may also require clear specifications for materials, dimensions, surface condition, inspection, packaging, and traceability.
For these projects, the combination of manufacturing capability and quality-control capability becomes especially important.
Hongyi manufactures precision metal components for automotive and new energy applications, including stamped components, deep-drawn parts, motor-related metal components, and battery-related metal parts.
Our production equipment includes precision stamping presses covering a wide range of tonnages, together with tooling, cleaning, automated inspection, and measurement capabilities.
By integrating these processes, we can support customers from tooling development and sample production through to stable mass production.

Inspection Should Match the Part

There is no single inspection method that is suitable for every stamped component.
A small copper terminal and a deep-drawn motor housing have very different critical features. A battery component may also have different inspection requirements from an automotive bracket.
This is why quality planning should begin with the customer's drawing and technical requirements.
Before production, important characteristics should be identified clearly.
During production, the appropriate inspection method can then be selected for those characteristics.
This may include visual inspection, CCD inspection, dimensional measurement, process checks, or other verification methods depending on the product.
The result is a more practical quality-control process focused on the features that actually matter to the customer.

Supporting Reliable Mass Production

For customers sourcing precision metal components, price and production capacity are important. Consistency is equally important.
A supplier must be able to produce the same component repeatedly while maintaining stable dimensions, appearance, and manufacturing quality.
At Dalian Hongyi Precision Parts Manufacturing Co., Ltd., inspection is integrated into the manufacturing process to support this goal.
Through automated CCD inspection, dimensional measurement, process control, tooling maintenance, cleaning, and final verification, we work to reduce manufacturing variation and support reliable mass production.
For automotive, new energy, electronics, medical, and industrial projects, our team can support customized precision stamping and deep-drawing requirements based on customer drawings and specifications.
